A Happy New Year ! あけましておめでとうございます
How did you spend at first day of 2012 ?
I am planing what is my aim in this year. It is my health. We can do anything if we are healthy. What should we do to keep my good health
1. Don't eat too much.
2. To have good posture.
3. Get some exercise, walking, running, playing table tennis (this is a recent boom for me)....
As to No.2, I recently read a book that written by Japanese Noh player. I have seen a performance of noh once when I was a student. However, it is traditional performing art and we rarely see it in daily life. The motion and posture of Noh performance is good to health. Some noh players can play until old age. The secret of their health is the motion and posture. This book is useful for me.
A Japanese phrase is written in the book. It is 初心忘るべからず Shosin wasuru bekarazu. It is a phrase of Zeami 世阿弥 who was aesthetician for Noh. This original means "Remember your original intention." However, there are three meanings in it. I knew at first time.
I decided that it is my slogan in 2012. Don't be afraid my first challenge remembering my original intention.

Makoto 誠 - Sincerity
There is a or some meaning for Chinese Character. 誠 (Makoto) means sincerity, honesty or seriousness. I like this character. I think shape is good.
Now a book is sold well and reputable in Japan. Author is a football player, Makoto Hasebe 長谷部 誠 and he is a captain of national football team. Now he plays in VfL Wolfsburg of Germany. Football is more popular in Japan after 2010 FIFA World Cup and most of Japanese know about him. his sincere comment after national team was beaten by PK was impressive for me.
I bought and read his book. He wrote about his philosophy, habit or private life. His personality is sincere and earnest like his name. "Seijitu" 誠実 means sincerity and I like this word. There is a Japanese proverb "Na wa Tai wo Arawasu" 名は体をあらわす. The name expresses the character or substance. He is just like this proverb.
Sincerity is virtue for human being. "Seijitsu" is important for especially our society and sincere person is confided in our life. Sometimes it is unfavorable to be too earnest, however, I want to be sincere.
The royalty on this book is used as donation for victims of this earthquake.

1Q84
Rainy season (梅雨 tsuyu) begins in Japan. A lot of hydrangeas (紫陽花 ajisai) bloom around my home now.
This, 1Q84, is a title of a Japanese new novel by Haruki Murakami. Now it is best seller and one million copies has been sold about for two weeks in Japan.
Haruki Murakami is very famous and popular novelists and has a lot fans in my country and well-known to foreign people. We are proud of his talent. Kafka on the Shore 海辺のカフカ, Norwegian Wood ノルウェーの森 etc. You might see his translated books in bookstore.
He received Jerusalem Prize this February and he made a speech at awarding ceremony. I found his speech in English on web site.
http://www.47news.jp/47topics/e/93880.php
“Between a high, solid wall and an egg that breaks against it, I will always stand on the side of the egg.”
This is impressive phrase for me.

Change
Two news were big topics in few days. One is a news that famous Japanese music director, Tetsuya Komuro, was arrested as suspicious for fraud. He is a talented producer who composed a lot of super hit songs in 1990. There are a lot of beautiful his songs. And I liked some his songs. He earned great amount of money and became super rich. But nowadays he gets into big mount of debt. His glory at that time might be actually too unnatural when I think the period now. Everyone was surprised and disappointed from hearing this news.
http://search.japantimes.co.jp/cgi-bin/nn20081105a1.html
Another is that new American president, Barack Obama, was elected yesterday. He is first African American president as you know. It got a historical day. The scene of his address in TV screen was like one scene in a Hollywood movie. His slogan for presidential election is “Change”
The period or our situation is always changing. It is inevitable that our situation changes more or less for everything and everyone.
There is a Japanese phrase,Eiko seisui, 栄枯盛衰. This means that the glory has not continued and it will fall into a decline someday. It’s like a tree or plant. And time goes by as the current of a river.
I think those news are symbolic of the word “change”.
Will our world change after new American president inaugurates? (although the change that he said was for American people)
I think that we have to accept the change, good and bad things.

Lost Great Talent
There will be some great actors or actresses in your countries. A great Japanese actor died recently. His name is Ken Ogata. Japanese movie or entertainment fans would be disappointed about hearing this news. I think he was actor just like Robert De Niro or Jack Nicholson. He can act every roles, good person or villain.
When I saw his movie "Kichiku" (The Demon), I admired his performance in this movie. Original story of this film is novel of Seicho Matsumoto, who was one of very famous and popular mystery novelists in Japan. The story was very heavy, however, I recommend to see it.
Though Mr.Ogata knew his mortal disease, he continued to work without treatment in hospital. He chose his life as an actor. We were touched for his choice as professional.
There are a lot of his famous movies. If you have a chance to see his film, you will be able to enjoy his performance.

Ai 愛
"Ai" in Japanese means "love". We often name "Ai" for girls name in Japan.
Ai Fukuhara is a table tennis player and very popular in Japan. Table tennis isn't popular in Japan, however, almost of Japanese will know Ai Fukuhara, as "Ai chan" of table tennis.
Why we know her ? When she was a little girl, we have seen her plays. She was so cute. (She is certainly cute now.) I remember she was hitting a ball and practiced with her mother crying. She begun table tennis at about three years old. And she won many games. Everyone said she was genius for table tennis. Now she is nineteen years old and participate this Olympic.
Her popularity is not only in Japan. She is an idle in China. Because she played in Chinese Pro League. She speaks Chinese very well. When Japanese athletes normally play in China, the games are perfectly away for Japan. I have heard the booing for Japanese players or athletes several times. However, Ai chan is special. I read the news that she has a lot of Chinese fans.
Each nationalities has prejudice or hate for particular nation. History is generally the reason of needle, especially China and Japan has long history until now. But one person can change the bad feelings to friendship.
"Ai " 愛 becomes a go-between for China and Japan.

Yawara-chan
Judo is Japanese original sports and one of the sports for Olympic. The most famous Japanese female Judoka, Ryoko Tani got bronze medal yesterday. She have gotten two gold medals in past Olympics. Almost Japanese were touched her performances and like her fighting spirit. She is very small, , however super strong. We call her "Yawara-Chan". We write Judo in Chinese char actor as 柔道. Yawara 柔 is other reading of Judo.
We had expected she would get gold medal again this time. Because she said famous phrase at her interview after she gave birth to her son.
"I have gotten gold medal when my family name was Tamura (her maiden name) And I have gotten gold medal when my family name is "Tani". And I want to got gold medal after I have a son. "
She hasn't got gold medal and we were so disappointed, however, we are touched again. She is super strong heroine in Japan.
And we will cheer up other Japanese Judoka.

Ichiro
Do you know Ichiro, a baseball player of Measure league ? Ichiro is super hero in Japan. I'm not baseball fan, however, he is one of my favorite sports athletes.
Baseball has been very popular sports in Japan for a long time. Baseball player is the most popular occupation for Japanese boys. Now a lot of Japanese baseball players play in Major league in USA. Hideki Matsui in New York Yankees, Daisuke Matsuzaka in Boston Red Socks, etc.
Ichiro (Suzuki) is in Seattle Mariners. He is a hero in Seattle, too. His pre-swing pose or warming up is very unique. His behaviors has rhythm and are like ritual. He hits almost every game. American fans are enthused about his marvelous performances, catching a ball or throwing it to home base, the ball is as if laser beam.
I have seen his interview in TV Program. He is always calm, quiet, manly at field and also private time. He do his special training every day. I often think he is like a Samurai without saying vain things. We are so happy to hear his news. If you see his performance, you must be his fan.
These are his photos.

Ryoma Sakamoto
Who is popular and great historian whom a lot of Japanese admire and respect ?
I think that Ryoma Sakamoto is very popular. At the end of the Edo period, Bakumatsu, he made every effort to change our future and become international and modern country. He is one of the heroes for Japanese people. The history in this period is very interesting.
The people in Bakumatsu might think of the future of Japan most seriously. Japan was very slow and peaceful in Edo period. However, we shut out world outside of Japan and we hadn’t known other modern world.
Ryoma Sakamoto was one of Samurai of Tosa domain and very progressive. And he contributed to make a decision of opening trade with other countries.
After American ambassadors came to establish relations, we had to choose. Which way was better for us, conventional and slow life or modern life? As a result, we were forced to change our life and future.
G8 Toyako summit was over yesterday in Hokkaido, a land of north Japan. Now Japan becomes an economic power and is a member of world leaders through the history of Bakumatsu. Is present Japanese situation ideal future for the samurais including Ryoma Sakamoto or politicians from Bakumatsu to Meiji period ? I don’t know.
However, I hope that our culture and technology help world people and everyone can live safely and enjoy our present life.

Southern All Stars
Now a lot of fans are sad to hear the news now. Southern All Stars is a very popular and super Japanese band. They declared the pause to play as a band recently.
The lead vocal, Keisuke Kuwata composed every songs and almost of them have been in the charts. We always call the band “Southern” (Japanese pronunciation is "sazan".) as abbreviated name.
“Southern” has played for 30 years and people especially love his love songs. The fans or not will have sung his songs once at Karaoke. I am one of them. He has husky voice. I like his voice. We are touched with the melody and his lyrics and our experiences overlap. His songs remind Shonan Kaigan (shore) and their various (sweet) memories for his fans. Shonan shore is one of surfing spot in Kanagawa prefecture near Tokyo . Some songs are based on this place. The fans used to go to the sea with boyfriends or girlfrend listening to sazan's songs in the car.
“Katte-ni Sindbad“ was a debut song and very sensational thirty years ago.
“ Itoshi-no Ellie” is one of the most famous song in Japan and was covered as English version by Ray Charles , “Ellie my love”.
“Tsunami” was super hit song in 2000. We are sad to not be able to hear Southern’s performance for a while, however, the songs are alive in our mind.

Culture of Other Countries
I have enjoyed two Italian cultures, painting and film, yesterday.
Especially Tokyo have a lot of art museums, concert halls, galleries, etc. Many festivals or special exhibitions for culture of other countries are held here. We can always enjoy these events.
The National Art Center was opened last year in Roppongi. This museum is designed by a Japanese famous and international architect, Kisho Kurokawa (He was died last year.). I went there to see the exhibition of Modigliani. The museum is so modern and space is so wide and the furniture of natural materials is used. I liked it. And the exhibition was so nice. A lot of people enjoyed this exhibition.
Post card of my favorite picture
I went to Italian Film Festival 2008 in the afternoon. We can 11 Italian films for 6 days in the festival. Some Film festivals like this are often held, too. We can see almost Hollywood films anytime. Also we can frequently see popular some films of other countries in movie theater nowadays. I saw a Italian film, "Centotiodi" that my friends recommended. It was so interesting and I thought it was philosophical film. And I could know the Italian people, life and culture. (Every audiences were given a packet of dry spaghetti of Barilla. What spaghetti will I cook ?)
Anyway, Japanese people can always enjoy different cultures.

Green Young Leaves
Green young leaves (Wakaba) are sprouting in few days. It is so beautiful and I feel spring and I like seeing these trees.
April is the month to start new life in Japan. Freshmen enroll in school and recruits enter a company. When I see the green young leaves, I think they are like these young people. There is future and hope.
I heard an interview of a famous doctor who ninety-six years old, Shigeaki Hinohara. He examines his patients in hospital now and he looks very young. He writes a lot of books to live healthier. An interviewer asked him the secret of his longevity. He said that no matter how old we were, to start something new was very important and to meet and talk to young people is one of the secret. I remember that Giorgio Armani said like that.
People become older, we usually go around with friends of same ages. Also we are unwilling to start something new. We sometimes use excuse “ I’m old to start. So it is no use to learn something or start something.” I noticed that the curiosity for new thing is essential to spend our fruitful time.
I try to absorb new world like green young leaves. Recently I start to learn Yoga. It seems good for me. April is good season to start something new.

Ayu and Hicky - 2 Big Utahime (Diva)
What are these words?
If you are Japanese J-pop fan, you will know them. They are nickname of two Japanese female vocals and they are very popular among especially young ages.
Almost their songs were on hit charts. Two of them is called “Utahime” (We sometimes call female singer Utahime (Diva). Uta means song and Hime means princess in Japanese.) and are usually compared. Young popular female and male singers in the past could be idles if they were beautiful face or cute in Japan no matter they couldn't sing well. The talent as a singer was not important. The situation is changed. Almost J-pop singers are talented and these songs have originality.
New female singers debut now. However, Ayu and Hicky’s popularity is special .
Ayu, Ayumi Hamasaki is always a fashion leader among Japanese young girls. They are interested in her fashion and makeup. They want to be Ayu and copy her style. She is like a pretty doll has big eyes. Her performance on the stage is always gorgeous. She is like a princess. A lot of fans enthused her recent concert tour. She composed lyrics and her fans will sympathize her lyrics. http://avexnet.or.jp/ayu/en/
Hicky, Hikaru Utada debuted at 15 years old and her first album was million hit in Japan. She composes lyrics and music. Since she was born in New York, she is bilingual in Japanese and English. She have released an album in USA. Her mother was a famous Enka singer. Almost singles and albums became No.1. Some her songs are theme song for TV dramas or commercial songs. She releases new album now and sold well. One of songs in the album "Prisoner of love" is theme song of new TV drama in this spring. It will become No.1 hit. http://www.emimusic.jp/hikki/release/index_e.htm
Her songs are my taste personally. I have some her albums. I think her Japanese lyrics are very unique. http://www.emimusic.jp/hikki/news/news_e.php

Cleaning up Everest
Japanese alpinist Ken Noguchi tries to climb and clean up Everest, the highest mountain in the world, in April. He was the youngest alpinist who succeeded in climbing Everest in the world. He is well known as Japanese adventurer in Japan. He has climbed to pick up the rubbish of the Everest and Mt.Fuji several times after his achievement.
I have heard his speech about his experiences as an adventurer in a big hall. And I have read his books. He is so attractive guy. He knew big amount of the various nation’s rubbish that left, especially a lot of Japanese rubbish were thrown away after his climbing. He was shocked about decline of Japanese moral and felt shamed. And he decided to pick up. The quantity was several tons each climbing for cleaning. His activity is continuing now.
Since these activities are big projects, he needs other support to pick up. A lot of Nepalese assistants and other supporters help him. And it is perilous project every time.
To conquer high mountains is great challenge and an honor for adventurers. Only the achievement is always prominent in the news, but he unveils the fact of the other side. A lot of Japanese could know the situation of nature.
I hope he and his companies come back without any accidents.
